Bird Island Nature Reserve
The three-acre Bird Island Nature Reserve is an important breeding and resting ground for this cacophony and, at first sight, unruly flock of birds that serves as both an eco-friendly opportunity and a tourist attraction. Bird Island is one of only six places where Cape Boobies breed in the world. It is also the only breeding ground that the public can easily reach, although the breakwater has also allowed the domestic cat to access mature pickings, especially the chicks and eggs. You can also reach the island by ferry.

Bird Island has a fantastic modern bird population that has transformed the island into an educational classroom for the lives of these birds. Between April and September, one can unobtrusively watch unique pairing dancers of the gannet and the incredible voice of thousands of these birds in their nests.

Cape Columbine Nature Reserve
Although the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve, often referred to by locals as “Tietiesbaai”, is located in the southwest of the popular weekend city, it is often referred to as “lying in paternoster”. Then discover that the wilderness and beauty of the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve is worth a visit. Declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1973, one can only be thankful that this stretch of incredible scenery remains untouched by evolution, the Cape Columbine lighthouse is a beacon amidst the cliffs – the only brick and mortar in the reserve..

Darling wine route
Although traditionally part of the Swartland, Darling is now a delimited wine district and home to its own wine route, including five wine cellars, all benefiting from the cool breeze off the Atlantic Ocean and the long, hot summers to produce some stunning wines with concentrated flavor, Depth and intensity.

The Cape West Coast has recently been recognised as a wine-growing region with great potential and is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful areas in South Africa. Darling is only an hour’s drive from Cape Town and you can easily reach the basements within a day trip.

Cape West Coast Attractions
Shaped like a flattened whale with fins on both sides, Dassen Island, seen from the air, is located on the Cape West Coast near Yzerfontein. A century ago, Dassen Island was home to over a million African penguins and the largest African penguin colony in the world. The egg cell harvest, at a rate of approximately 600,000 a year, was soon exposed to this claim, as was a population of domestic cats that went ferocious.

While the number of cats has been reduced and the penguins are partially recovering, their numbers are only a fraction of what they used to be. Visit the museum on the island and an information board gives an insight into the story: “Penguin eggs are rich” states. “When soap and water sank on the islands, men even washed in penguin eggs.”

The Rocherpan Nature Reserve
Rocher enthusiasts setting off along the west coast to visit this nature reserve near Velddrif may tell you that bird life is unbelievable, but what they will not reveal is that it’s also a wonderful environment for whales to observe. The Rocherpan Nature Reserve is located just 25 kilometers north of Velddrif near Dwarskersbos.

The majority of the 914-acre Rocherpan Nature Reserve is part of a seasonal vlei that dries between March and June. But the beauty and fascination that comes with it is that the adjacent part of the Atlantic Ocean is also a marine reserve that extends 500 meters towards the sea to reach the Rocherpan Nature Reserve. The combination of the two leads to a collection of 183 species of birds, including 70 waterfowl.

The West Coast National Park
Inland, in the remote harbor of Saldanha Bay, lies the azure waters of Langebaan Lagoon, the centre of the West Coast National Park. Thousands of seabirds lie on sheltered islands, pristine golden beaches stretch endlessly into the early morning mist, and brooding salt marshes harbour a large number of migratory birds from the northern hemisphere.

The park surrounds the Langebaan Lagoon, a Ramsar site in the world (the site is of global importance to wetland birdlife). Many of the waders are Palaearctic immigrants, so summer is the best time to visit the lagoon, especially in September, when the species are exhausted from their transcontinental voyages, and in March, when they gather in large numbers, to the lagoon
